(For reports of earlier NORTH EAST NATIONAL shows 2006 -8, see Left- hand column) 2009 Show Report For the third successive year, the 2009 North East National Show, promoted by the budgerigar societies of South Shields and Sunderland recorded a noteworthy increase in entries. This year’s entry was the more satisfying because it came hard on the heels of two local shows held in the preceding two weeks, The Northern BS Rare & Special Varieties show, and the Darlington BS Open show which each recorded similar success. It is thus well to be seen that the fancy is growing stronger in the Northern BS area! There was perhaps a little trepidation before this year’s show because 2009 marked a great change for this event -- it changed its location to Sunderland after a number of years based at South Shields and there was thus some conjecture as to whether fanciers would relish the change. In the event, the choice of the new venue, the Grindon Young People’s Centre in Grindon, Sunderland proved to be an overall success. This whole building is centred around a Sports hall which, as such, does not have natural lighting, but the hall is extremely spacious and well capable of comfortably housing double this year’s benched entry of 557. It has the addition of excellent office facilities, plus a café/kitchen area which boasts a picture window overlooking the show hall -- an ideal viewing gallery for all events taking place in the hall. Now the committee can look further into ways of working towards achieving the target of an even higher entry, alongside persuading more people – especially young folk- to take up this fascinating hobby.
Ray Brown (York), Ian Clark (Darlington, John Rogers
(Mold, Flintshire) and Geoff Tuplin
(Brough, East Yorkshire)
They bestowed the Best in Show award on an excellent Green Cock,
staged in superb condition by Keith Allison of
. The Best Young Bird in Show was another well admired exhibit, from the stud of Ken Tart of Stockton, while Peter Watts of Redcar took the prizes for his hen which was adjudged Best Opposite Sex in show. Each of the two promoting societies has seen an encouraging influx of members over the last couple of years, and it was indeed pleasing to note that each of those new members who are interested in the exhibition side of the budgerigar fancy achieved some success at this, their own show, The officials, judges stewards and visitors were once again well ‘fed and watered’ by the catering team of Ed Freel ,Mesdames Marshall and Mr Marshall Senior, and Lilian Shotton thus complementing, if not outdoing, the work of our new Joint Show Manager, Lee Marshall. Finally, our hearty thanks for Mr Ron Simpson of Leeds, the long-standing show secretary of The Budgerigar Society’s Club Show (held annually in Doncaster, who has over the years developed and excellent computer program based on Microsoft Office Access, and has made copies available, gratis, to all show secretaries. This offer is being taken up by increasing numbers of shows to good effect. Certainly it enabled the North East National show secretary of this show to complete his allotted tasks in comfortable time. For those who have not yet seen the show hall, a few extra details --- for next year ???? The compilation below gives some idea of the facilities, but the internal pictures do not do it full justice, because the hall was not in use at the time and therefore the sports lights had not yet built up to their Full, impressive, power. However, this image does give some idea of the proportions on offer -- the hall is very large and will accommodate all that we require of it, and more! Note also the viewing balcony, situated in the 'cafeteria area', which should prove popular. There is parking on the road outside the show hall, and also a small free Car Park on the opposite side of the road, at the top of which is also a popular public house - the Grindon Mill Inn which has its own car park for its customers! Schedules will be sent to all who have exhibited over the last three years. Please contact Dave Herring (davidherring@ukonline.co.uk if you want to be sure that you are on the mailing list
HOW TO GET THERE BY CAR........ The venue is on Grindon Lane and is easily accessible for those travelling by car, (Postcode for "SAT NAV" users is SR4 8HW) from the North, South and West of the city - which is well served by good trunk roads/motorways A1(m) & A19) to within only a few miles. They give on to two major roads into the city from its western side, the A183 and the A690, which are actually linked by Grindon Lane - so the hall is easy (and quick) to find!
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The committee and members of South Shields BS and Sunderland BS acknowledge, with gratitude the generosity of our sponsors - Bucktons and D R Foster, without whose support this show would have been much more difficult to stage to its present standard. Our additional thanks to the recent members of the, sadly closed, BLYTH VALLEY BS who made a generous donation from their closing club funds. We are also grateful to all societies, members, family and friends without whose cheerful and valuable support and encouragement the task of staging this event would have been very hard work !! -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
